Pigeons (and doves) have been a common subject in art for hundreds of years.  Pigeons were kept in manmade dovecotes as a cheap source of food across the ancient Indo-Mediterranean world. Pigeons, and depictions of them, have spread across the world with the same veracity as the ideas of those civilizations.
